Kelly M. Greenhill Session Overview

Kelly M. Greenhill is the Director of the MIT Seminar XXI Program, Resident Senior Research Fellow at MIT, and a faculty member at both​ Tufts University and at MIT’s Center for International Studies. Greenhill is author of Weapons of Mass Migration: Forced Displacement, Coercion, and Foreign Policy (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs 2010—second edition forthcoming), winner of the 2011 International Studies Association Best Book of the Year Award; and co-author and co-editor of Sex, Drugs, and Body Counts: The Politics of Numbers in Global Crime and Conflict (Cornell); The Use of Force: Military Power and International Politics, 8th ed. (Rowman and Littlefield); and Coercion: The Power to Hurt in International Politics (Oxford). Her research has also appeared in a variety of journals, including International Security, Security Studies, International Studies Quarterly, Civil Wars, European Law Journal and International Migration, as well as in media outlets, such as the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, the Financial Times, Foreign Policy, the BBC, and in briefs prepared for the U.S. Supreme Court and other organs of the US government. Greenhill is currently revising for publication another new book, a cross-national study of the influence of “extra-factual” sources of information, such as rumors, conspiracy theories, propaganda, and so-called “fake news” on international politics. The book is provisionally entitled Fear and Present Danger: Extra-factual Sources of Threat Conception and Proliferation. Greenhill holds an SM and a PhD from MIT, a CSS from Harvard, and a BA from UC Berkeley. She has held fellowships at Stanford’s Center for Security and Cooperation, Harvard’s Olin Institute for Strategic Studies, Harvard's Belfer Center, the University of Cambridge (UK), Columbia’s Saltzman Institute and SOAS (U of London, UK).
